What is Reiki?

Reiki, which means Universal Life Force, boosts the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of both the recipient and the practitioner.  It is an ancient method of hands-on healing, and when properly performed, Reiki energy flows through the arms and hands of the practitioner and into the cells of the recipient’s body.

It is important to know and understand that the practitioner acts as the conduit between the universal life energy and the client, thus delivering energy but not actually healing the client.  The wisdom of the client’s body determines where the energy can be best utilized.

What happens during a Reiki treatment?

Reiki can be done with the hands above the body or lightly touching the body, the client communicating what is most comfortable for them.  After the client is comfortable on the table and has gone through the initial assessment, the first of three hand placement patterns starts.  During the Reiki treatment, the client may feel heat or a tingling sensation in the areas being treated – this is an indication that the Reiki energy is flowing and is nothing to be alarmed by.  The client is positioned on their back for the first and second patterns, and positioned on their stomach for the third pattern.  Once all three patterns have been completed, a closing assessment is done and the session is over. A typical session lasts about an hour.

What happens during a Reiki treatment for my pet?

When performing treatment on our four-legged friends, it’s important to offer Reiki to them from a comfortable distance so they can understand its healing potential and participate in the healing process without feeling pressured or overwhelmed.  This approach lends itself to a healthy establishment of trust in the healing relationship.  Many times, the animal will come up to the practitioner and smell their hands as a way of assessing this new sensation of energy.  The animal should be allowed to move freely around the treatment space and to determine how close they want to be to the practitioner.  Usually, animals become extremely relaxed and sometimes fall asleep during a treatment.  Once the animal gets used to the feeling of Reiki energy, they position themselves close to the practitioner.  There may also be times that an animal decides not to accept a Reiki treatment, and in these instances a treatment should not be given.  Their body language, such as moving as far away from the practitioner as they can, pacing, turning away, or showing other signs of irritation, are clear indications they are not open to receiving a treatment that day.  In this case, it would be wise to conduct a distance treatment outside the presence of the animal.  A typical animal Reiki treatment session lasts between twenty minutes and one hour depending on the needs and desires of the animal.  Reiki energy enhances recovery from physical and emotional traumas or surgeries and increases the overall health and well-being of us and our four-legged friends.
